The 22nd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 26th September 1797 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Lounger, a bay colt by Drone out of Miss Judy, owned by Mr Gilbert Crompton. A field of 8 runners contested the race, although there were 12 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 300 Guineas. (Equivalent to £31,200 in 2017)

The winner ran in the name of Mr Crompton but was actually owned by Reverend Henry Goodricke the Rector of Aldborough. He had earlier owned the St Leger winner Impratrix in 1782 and later won the same Classic with Quiz in 1801.
